Lunch, evening party or afterwork: which end-of-year party should you choose?

The format depends on your team more than on your budget. A team with lots of parents or shift patterns will be happier to come to a festive lunch on a Thursday or Friday lunchtime. A young team expects a dance party. A company spread over several sites may prefer afterwork drinks from 6pm to 10pm, shorter and less expensive, which everyone can join after work.
