Which venue for a corporate party in Marseille?

What should you ask yourself before looking for a venue?

Together with catering, the venue is the biggest share of a corporate party budget. Before visiting, answer four questions; they rule out half the options.

1. How many guests, really? Count the likely sign-ups, not the total headcount. A venue that is too big looks empty; one that is too small becomes stifling.
2. Cocktails or a seated dinner? The same venue holds far fewer people at tables than standing: the Rowing Club rooftop takes 350 people for cocktails, but 250 seated. A seated dinner also freezes the evening, whereas cocktails get teams mingling.
3. Until what time? If you want to dance after midnight, rule out venues in residential areas or with an 11pm closing time.
4. How will guests get home? A city-centre venue can be reached on foot or by metro; an estate needs a shuttle or organised car-sharing.

Which party venues in Marseille for which atmosphere?

Rooftops and the Old Port

This is the postcard view: sunset over Fort Saint-Jean, the lights of the harbour, then the dance party. The Rowing Club brings together a rooftop, a more intimate lounge and a waterside space in one venue. Over at the Prado, the Massilia Beach rooftop, above the Prado Shopping centre, looks out over the Orange Vélodrome. One thing to watch: the mistral. Always ask for the indoor fallback plan.

Beaches available for private hire

Sport Beach, on the Prado beaches, welcomes 10 to 400 people with a pool, several bars and a meeting room: you can run a seminar in the afternoon and carry straight on into the party. Heritage and unusual venues

The Grand Hall of the Palais de la Bourse impresses with its height and suits a gala evening or an awards ceremony. In La Joliette, the inner courtyards of Docks Village house venues that can be hired for afterwork drinks or a party of 100 to 150 people. These venues often require a higher technical budget: fire safety, SSIAP-certified fire safety officers, cleaning and lighting are sometimes charged on top of the hire.

Estates and country houses

The Château de Forbin, in the 11th arrondissement and backing onto the Calanques National Park, allows an open-air party away from neighbours, with several spaces to separate cocktails, dinner and the dance floor. What does the venue provide, and what do you need to bring?

Two parties with the same advertised price can cost very different amounts depending on what is included. Ask each venue about:

• Furniture: high tables, tables, chairs, covers; on a beach or at an estate, you sometimes have to hire everything.
• Sound system: a system suited to a dance party, or just background music? Does the venue impose a sound limiter?
• Lighting: a rooftop at 10pm without ambient lighting loses all its charm.
• Caterer: imposed, recommended or free choice? An imposed caterer makes things simpler but limits negotiation.
• Security and cleaning: included or charged separately.
