Seaside events in Marseille: which venue should you choose?

Where are the seaside venues in Marseille?

Marseille stretches along the sea from L’Estaque to the Calanques, but the venues able to host a corporate event are concentrated in a few areas. Each has its own character.

• The J4 and the entrance to the Old Port (Vieux-Port): the Mucem, Fort Saint-Jean and, opposite, the Rowing Club and the Palais du Pharo. This is the easiest area to reach by public transport.
• Les Catalans and the Corniche Kennedy: more intimate venues looking out to the Frioul islands, such as the Espace Soleil at the Cercle des Nageurs.
• The Prado beaches: beaches available for private hire and large spaces for big groups.
• The Calanques and Cassis: spectacular scenery, but access and regulations are more restrictive.
• The Bay of Marseille: the sea seen from the sea, aboard a sailing boat, a catamaran or a yacht.

Which seaside venue for which event?

Below the Pharo, other addresses (sailing club restaurants, beach establishments) can also be hired privately for a hundred people or more: their capacities need checking case by case.

Why are the Old Port and the J4 the simplest option?

If your guests are coming by public transport or from Saint-Charles station, this is the area to favour: Vieux-Port metro, tram at La Joliette, public car parks. The Mucem lends itself to prestige formats, with one limit to bear in mind: events there finish at 11pm. The Rowing Club, just opposite, lets you carry on into the night and even arrive by boat at Le Tarmac, its waterside space open in the evening. The Palais du Pharo, in its park above the harbour entrance, tends to host conferences and large receptions.

Why choose the Corniche or the Prado for more space?

On the Corniche Kennedy, the Espace Soleil at the Cercle des Nageurs offers a 150 m² room that is already equipped (sound system, video projector, microphones): ideal for a working day that ends facing the sunset. Further south, Sport Beach on the Prado beaches welcomes large groups, with a beach atmosphere and activities on site.

In both areas, parking is limited in summer and the Corniche gets busy at the end of the day. For a group of more than 50 people, a shuttle from a central point (the station, the Old Port, a park-and-ride) avoids a chain of delays.

What pitfalls should you avoid by the water?

The mistral

It can blow hard for several days in a row, even in summer. A magnificent terrace becomes unusable, tablecloths fly away, and the sound does not carry well. Plan a covered fallback included in the booking, and decide early: the day before or that morning.

Cool, damp evenings

Even in June, the temperature drops quickly by the water after sunset. Plan a sheltered space or blankets, and let your guests know. Humidity and sea spray also mean sound and lighting equipment must be protected and set up away from the water.

The sunset

It is often the highlight. It happens after 9pm in late June, but before 8pm from mid-September: schedule the cocktails and speeches around the date, not the other way round.

Sound and the neighbours

Seaside venues are often close to homes. Many impose a sound limiter or a cut-off time for amplified music. A DJ used to these venues adjusts the volume without killing the atmosphere.
