What is the average price of a DJ for a corporate party?

The most reliable benchmark is still a real quote. For a corporate party of 150 to 200 employees in Marseille, from 7pm to midnight, an event agency priced the DJ at around €1,100. This amount covers the artist’s performance, their equipment, the agency’s margin and, often, part of the coordination.

When you deal directly with a DJ collective, the same need is priced differently, because there is only one company between you and the artist. The price then depends mainly on three variables: how long the DJ is there, the equipment brought and the preparation required.

These differences do not mean that one package is “too expensive”: they show that you need to compare equivalent services. A quote of €1,100 may include a technician and dance-floor lighting; a quote of €299 assumes the room already has a decent sound system.

What affects a DJ’s price?

Sound system: provided by the venue or brought in?

This is the first question to ask the venue. Many restaurants, rooftops and seminar rooms in Marseille have an installed sound system, sometimes capped by a volume limiter. In that case, a DJ with just their controller is enough. In an empty hall, at an estate or outdoors, you need speakers, sometimes a subwoofer, and all the cabling.

Room size and number of guests

Two speakers properly cover a reception room of up to around 150 people. Beyond that, or in a room with a high ceiling, you add power and finer tuning. An under-equipped DJ plays loud to compensate, and the sound quality suffers.

Dance-floor lighting

A dance floor without lighting often stays empty. A simple lighting stand is enough for a party of 60 people; for a real dance party, you plan moving heads, lighting totems and possibly a haze machine to reveal the beams.

Duration and timings

Our packages include 5 hours of mixing, which covers a standard evening from 7.30pm to 12.30am. If cocktails start at 6.30pm or the party needs to go on until 2am, include extra hours in the quote from the outset.

Preparation and speeches

A corporate DJ does not just mix: they amplify the director’s speech, launch a video, accompany an awards ceremony. A preparation meeting, wireless microphones and a dedicated technician have a cost, but they prevent feedback at the worst possible moment.

How much do a DJ’s extra hours cost?

This is the item that causes the most unpleasant surprises. The party is going well, management asks for “one more hour”, and the bill goes up. With us, an extra hour costs €75 until 2am and €100 after that. Check three points on every quote: the hourly rate, whether the hour is charged in full or pro rata, and the latest finishing time set by the venue. There is no point planning an extension if the venue closes at midnight.

Why does a DJ cost more through an agency?

A general event agency does not usually employ DJs: it books one from an artist or a collective, then recharges the service with its margin. On top of that come management fees, from 6 to 10% of the overall budget depending on the agency. This model has real value when the agency coordinates a complex event: venue, caterer, transport, accommodation.

For the entertainment side, on the other hand, booking directly with a team that has its own DJs, speakers and lighting removes a layer of margin. The DJ you meet at the preparation meeting is the one who will play on the night.

What extra costs should you plan on top of the DJ?

• Travel: included within Marseille with us, then €1 per kilometre (round trip) for Aix, Cassis or La Ciotat.
• Additional equipment: an extra wireless microphone at €45, a subwoofer at €100, a dance-floor lighting pack from €200.
• The artist’s meal: over a 5-hour evening, it is customary to provide a meal or a food tray for the DJ.
• Music rights: playing music at an event falls under SACEM, the French music royalties body; ask your supplier how they are covered. The AlloDJMarseille association has its own contract.
• Booking fee: €50 per event with us, for insurance and permit applications.

Should you add a live musician or an activity?

To give the cocktail reception some extra flair, a DJ and saxophonist duo works very well: the saxophonist plays over the highlights while the DJ holds the musical base. Through an agency, a saxophonist is often charged at around €980; in our community, prices start at €300 for 2 hours. A music quiz hosted by the DJ at €150 or karaoke at €190 are also great ways to launch the evening before the dance floor opens.
