A DJ with their mixing equipment starts at €299 when the venue provides the sound system. With 2 speakers for 150 people, a microphone and a lighting stand, allow from €399. Karaoke, with 4 wireless microphones, starts at €190, and the photo booth with unlimited prints at €349. Hours beyond 5 hours of mixing are set out in the contract.

Where to celebrate a birthday in Marseille?

Three options come up most often. A village hall or a hired room: affordable, but often fitted with a sound limiter. A restaurant or a privately hired beach: the caterer is on site, but you need to check the space available for the DJ and the dance floor. Finally, a rented villa, very popular in summer around Marseille, Aix-en-Provence and Cassis: it is the most flexible setting, but also the one where the neighbours impose the most rules.

What pitfalls should you avoid?

• A playlist that is too niche: note down the must-play songs and the ones to avoid, but let the DJ read the room.
• Forgetting the neighbours when renting a villa: let them know and respect the finishing time.
• Improvised speeches without a microphone: a wireless microphone stops half the guests from hearing nothing.
• Booking too late: Saturdays from May to September go several months in advance.
