What does a DJ do at a corporate event?

A corporate party DJ does much more than play one track after another. They read the room: they know that a board of directors and a team of young sales staff don’t expect the same thing, that a seated dinner needs a volume that lets people talk, and that a dance floor is built up in stages. They also act as sound engineer: the DJ is often the one who plugs in the CEO’s microphone, plays the review-of-the-year video and announces the awards.

On a typical evening from 7.30pm to 1am, the DJ covers three moods:

1. The welcome drinks: lounge, soul or reworked jazz, at a volume that lets guests catch up. It’s the perfect moment to add a live saxophonist.
2. Dinner and speeches: more present background music between courses, complete silence during speeches, videos and highlights cued in.
3. The dance party: opening the dance floor, a gradual build-up, crowd-pleasers from the 80s to today, then a well-managed end to the night.

How much does a DJ cost for a corporate party in Marseille?

Price differences between two DJ quotes almost always come down to three things: how long the DJ is there, the equipment provided (the DJ alone with their controller, or with sound and lighting for the room) and the middleman. As a benchmark, an event agency charges around €1,100 for a party DJ from 7pm to midnight, before its management fees. At ADJM, the DJs are part of our community: there is no middleman. Extra hours are charged at €75 per hour until 2am, then €100 per hour. They are set out in the contract: no improvised negotiation at midnight.

What should you ask a DJ before booking?

• Have they played corporate events before, with speeches and an audience of all ages?
• Who provides the sound and lighting, and is the equipment suited to the number of guests?
• Is there a preparation meeting for the playlists and the running order?
• What happens if the DJ is ill or the equipment breaks down?
• Does the contract specify the times, extra hours and insurance?

We answer yes to every one of these questions: that is the advantage of a community of more than 40 DJs who work together. If a DJ is unable to attend, another member, briefed on your event, takes over.

What entertainment can you add to the DJ?

The DJ is the foundation, but can carry much more. A hosted music quiz (blind test) over dessert (from €150), karaoke at the end of the evening (from €190), an MC for the award presentation, or cold spark machines for the arrival of dessert.
